Spinning…setting up my spin with a few quick back crossovers, gaining speed now I cut my right back inside edge into the ice and step sharply onto my left forward outside edge and snap into my spin. Arms and right leg extended finding my center and then slowly pulling in my arms and right leg across my body, increasing my rotation speed until the world is just a blur. Spinning for as long as the momentum will allow and then it’s over, rotation slowing and I find myself checking out of the spin and everything is once again in focus. That’s what happened to my summer, it was just a blur.

When the summer’s spinning stopped I found that Indian Lake Artisans knitting needles had traveled around the world. Yes, we have definitely gone global. From the top of the world north of the Arctic Circle, to France and then down under to New South Wales, Australia. Amazing. To think in one year to reach so many people in all parts of the world is just awesome.

If you travel to Inuvik, Northwest Territories you will find a wonderful book store and gallery gift shop, Boreal Books. Mary Beckett, proprietor, embraces native art and nature as she showcases an abundance of creative pieces from so many wonderful artists. Boreal Books is my newest retail shop, check out her website and store, http://www.borealbooks.com/, and it’s one of many retailers to carry our new shawl pins. The shawl sticks are basically shorter single versions of our smaller sized knitting needles. The pins are available in any wood with any topper but the most popular are the feathers, owls, fish and rowboats. My quilting friends love the feather and owl pins to use as stilettos. Just a little hint, a versatile gift for anyone on your shopping list. Speaking of gifts, Knit ‘n Style magazine loves the shawl sticks so much they made them one of their 12 Days of Christmas gifts. So many great projects to inspire your gift giving too in their December 2011 issue just hitting the newsstands now. Add a little extra warmth to your gifts this year and knit something special. Or better yet, make your friend a scarf and slip a shawl stick between the stitches to make your gift complete.

My traveling chair hasn’t physically traveled to Inuvik, France or Australia, but Mary Beckett assures me that my Jeep will handle the Dempster Highway just fine. Now I have to decide what time of year to visit the far north. How do you decide between viewing the Northern Lights, experiencing the Midnight Sun or enjoying nature’s rainbow of fall colors and berry picking? Fall… turning colors… twirling leaves…spinning yarn…my world is starting to look a little fuzzy again, warm and fuzzy that is.

Indian Lake Artisans has plenty to smile about and so it seems a lot of you do too! We all survived one of the most wintery seasons of recent memory and have arrived at spring with an abundance of plans for the warmth and sunshine. I know I’m looking forward to knitting on the dock and soaking up some sun. We have had a very busy past few weeks and I am going to do my best to touch on the news and happenings, and get you all up to speed. Let me begin.

The first product spot for Indian Lake Artisans’ knitting needles came out on the “Have You Seen” page in the June 2011 issue of Knit ‘n Style magazine!!! This is so exciting and I am just thrilled to have our knitting needles highlighted in a national publication! Knit ‘n Style is a wonderful magazine that features tips and instruction from renowned fiber artists and is always full of many wonderful patterns. I love the Vizions Open Vest, pictured on the magazine cover, and will definitely be adding it to the top of my project list. The vest is just one of many great patterns in this issue which has projects for the beginner through experienced artist, for crochet and knitting. Make sure you pick up your copy of Knit ‘n Style, buy some new yarn and get knitting! Thank you Knit ‘n Style for supporting us and knitters everywhere.

Two Michigan knitting stores are being added to our list of shops carrying Indian Lake Artisans’ knitting needles. We are very happy to welcome Skeins on Main in Rochester and Threadbenders in Wyoming where you’ll be able to purchase not only our knitting needles, but yarns and classes and support for your creative endeavors. Skeins on Main has some activities you will not want to miss this month. All the fun starts with the Pajama Party on Saturday, April 9th. You are not going to want to miss kickin’ back in your cozy pj’s, enjoying snacks, desserts, beverages and a movie while knitting, all for $10. Lori will be on hand to help you out if you have any questions or get stuck on a pattern. The fun starts at 6 pm and wraps up around 11 pm. Grab some knitting friends and make it a fun night out! Check out the Skeins on Main newsletter for details on the Pajama Party, new class registration and the Easter Egg Hunt. Lots of new yarns coming in to the store too.

I plan to get the Traveling Chair in the Jeep and head out to Wyoming and Threadbenders. I’ll take some pictures and write you a story but you’re just going to have to be patient. Heading west soon.

Lots of happenings going on around the country too from shop hops in Minnesota to fiber retreats in Ohio. Yarn Quest 2011 is a nine store shop hop today through the weekend in the greater Minneapolis area. I would wager you might spot some Indian Lake Artisans knitting needles in a raffle gift…just a hint. So if you are in the area this would be a fabulous opportunity to have some shopping fun and win some great prizes too. Check it out. And if a retreat is what the doctor ordered, the River Cities Fiber Clan is celebrating their anniversary with their annual fiber retreat April 15 – 17th. Members come from West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. To learn more about their guild and the retreat visit www.goodnewsllamas.com/fiberguild/. Activities abound out there – just find one that sparks your interest and get involved.

We have many new shops carrying our needles in California, Oregon, Colorado and Pennsylvania and I will do my best to write about these great shops. When traveling around the country, your home state or home town, please remember to support our retail shops. These stores offer us so much more than just a place to buy yarn and notions. They offer their expertise in the craft, friendship and support, and patience to help us through a tough sequence of stitches long after we’ve thrown up our hands and needles in disgust. Your best knitting friend is your local yarn shop. Next time you’re there, tell them thank you!

I’m setting a goal for myself to blog more often so you won’t need an entire lunch hour to read about the goings on at Indian Lake Artisans. I have a few articles already in my cue that I’ll be posting over the next few weeks and some new product announcements. All very exciting! In the meantime I anxiously await the ice melt off Indian Lake, a sure sign spring is here to stay. I’ll sign off now and leave you with many good wishes – happy knitting!

Excitement is definitely in the air…exhibiting at my very first trade show was met with great success and it was a lot of fun! Mark and I were a bit overwhelmed by the many wonderful and supportive people we met. Many thanks to all of you who befriended us and guided us through the trade show process. The needle arts industry is abound with cheerful friendly folks and why not…being surrounded by warm and cozy colorful fibers in life keeps your spirits up and heightens that comfort level. Don’t we all just love that cozy feeling? My head is still swimming with excitement from all the great people I met and all of the new shops anxiously waiting to receive their needle orders. I can’t wait to get back home and get them shipped for delivery!

This may be a good time to announce our new knitting needle sizes that are now available. The sizes we handcraft are 6 through 15, and here is a brief rundown on the tops and their corresponding US sizes; the size 6 has a feather top, the size 7 has an owl, the size 8 has a fish, the size 9 sports a rowboat top, the size 10 as you know has the arrowhead, the size 10.5 has a lantern, the size 11 comes with the acorn, the size 13 has a turtle and the log cabin is on the size 15. Whew! All copper tops are very light weight and totally cool. Each of the nine needle sizes come in 8″ length double points, 10″ or 14″ length single points, and you can select them in birch, walnut or cherry wood.

Enough about the knitting needles for a minute…it’s hard for the needles, as wonderful as they are, to compete with grandbabies! Right after the show we saw our good friends in San Diego and then hightailed it right up to Oakland to meet grandbaby Henry! His mom and dad have declared him perfect! And he really truly is! He is one week old and we are so blessed to be here and hold and kiss him. His parents are pretty awesome too. It will most likely be awhile before he can play with his cousin Emmett because they live far away from each other, but I have a sneaky suspicion they will become great friends. I know their Poppi cannot wait to take them fishing in our little yellow boat on Indian Lake. Oh those life moments we cherish so much. Check for yourself just how cute these two little baby boys are in their still way too big, handmade by me, “Grammy” alpaca hats…these were taken when each baby was 8 days old. Meet Emmett and Henry!

The baby is up and ready for a little snuggle with me so I’ll sign off by saying there are many projects and events on the drawing board from green planet festivals and fiber trunk shows to magazine spotlights and more. As these come closer to publication I’ll blog about them and let you all share in the adventure. It is going to be great fun!

Combine a local shop hop with the mission to support artisans and small business owners when purchasing gifts for friends and loved ones (and of course something for Santa), and I think you’ll agree, harmonic holiday convergence. Shops where you will discover some of the best gifts may be from a nearby family farm, studio and artisan that have crafted beautiful goods of the finest quality. What a great way to garner a community connection during the holiday season. If this ideal happens to be an aspiration of yours, this is your chance to accomplish those objectives. Come and discover 6 shops by participating in the Great Northeastern Yarn Shop Tour. It all begins at Labor of Love in Romeo, Michigan. I first visited Labor of Love this past July and immediately felt welcomed and inspired. The selection of yarn is vast and colorful, with an array of styles to satisfy the creative crocheter and knitter. Labor of Love has a very warm, inviting and cozy atmosphere that plays off the chic historical vibe of the quaint village of Romeo. Founded in 1828, Romeo was originally known as Indian Village, and is graced by the elegance of many stately century homes.

Tina Salgado, owner of Labor of Love, is an extremely talented artist and has an eye for color that is apparent as soon as you enter her shop. Tina’s shop has some great knitting spaces that easily accommodate groups for lessons around the table or drop in casual knitting. Labor of Love offers a wide assortment of knitting and crochet classes encompassing all levels of expertise and techniques. When you purchase a 6 week class, you have 8 weeks to complete the session of lessons. I found this quite convenient when my class time was interrupted with my recent trip to California. I just completed a class in fair isle knitting continental style and cables. Here are some pictures of my first baby hats, I have two grandchildren on the way in December, and my cable pillow in progress. Labor of Love is carrying Indian Lake Artisan knitting needles and the needles will be part of the winning raffle prizes from the shop hop. Did I mention that the proceeds from the shop hop passport purchases is being donated to Turning Point, a Women’s and Childrens’ Shelter? Art Van is matching all of the donations dollar for dollar so if you can’t find time in your busy schedule to enjoy the shop tour please consider purchasing a passport to help fund this great cause. Passports are $15 prior to the tour and available for $20 during the event. More reasons to gather some friends and head out for a day of fun and prizes.

The following shops will be on tour this coming Friday, December 3rd and Saturday, December 4th – 10am – 6pm both days

Labor of Love – Romeo

Crafty Lady Trio – Macomb

City Knits – Mt. Clemens

Knitter’s Hideaway – Armada

Sweet Pea Yarn & Gifts – St. Clair

Artisan Knits – St. Clair Shores

I understand 20% off yarn, goody bags, snacks and drinks, along with coupons for future use, will be some of the many store specials you’ll find on this first time Great Northeastern Shop Tour. Drawing for the gifts will take place December 11th at a Holiday Party at Labor of Love, with all of the participating shops. Please plan to attend, and save and give at the same time. Drive safely, have some fun and I’ll hope to see you somewhere along the way!

This was my perfect fall Saturday morning experience. The pastures at the Birchwood Inn had just a bit of mist rising as the sun came up warming the air from the previous night’s chill. The horses were calmly grazing and Lake Michigan with it’s deep autumn blue peaked through the treeline of deep golds and yellow. I think days such as this make October one of my favorite times to be in Michigan. Not too hot, not too cold, just right. My trip through the top of the mitten this morning was quite enjoyable and as my Jeep traversed the countryside aglow with autumn splendor, I really had a sense of being totally free and on top of the world. I stopped in at Three Pines Studio in Cross Village where they carry my knitting needles for sale. This wonderful art gallery was founded in 2000 and is filled with unique and pretty fantastic art from local Michigan artisans. Three Pines Studio defines itself as a working artists’ studio and sales gallery in the arts and crafts tradition. Their two working studios provide artists of all ages the necessary equipment to create in both clay and fiber mediums. The gallery features work by more than 50 artists and is currently hosting “Autumn Roads”, an all media show. I was greeted by Karen who was working on a cowl pattern made with three of the local hand dyed wools on a size 15 needle. I just could not resist and had to select my market basket of wool to create my own cowl. I love the way the yarn looks with my knitting needles tucked in the basket ( a perfect Michigan gift combination – the holidays are coming) and have decided to knit mine on the walnut needles, making a nice contrast with the wool color. All of their wool is from Lake View Farm and spun at Stonehedge Fiber Farm in East Jordan. (see earlier blog post about Stonehedge). I was then off to the Birchwood Inn where Janet Shumway was hosting the 13th year of her Fabric of Friendship Quilting Retreats. She makes sure everything is set to accommodate everyone’s project needs from big tables for basting and sewing to cozy couches and chairs by the fireplace for knitting and hand stitching projects. The main room at the Inn has floor to ceiling windows with wonderful light and a view of Lake Michigan. What could be better than a get away from our busy schedules in such a beautiful location to really get some work done on one of those UFOs. Some years workshops are offered and also vendors are invited in. Janet invited me up to show everyone my knitting needles which were very well received. I hope to join Janet on her next retreat which will be sometime in April. I enjoyed meeting the group and JD very much and hope to see you all again next year.

It was a year ago today that Mark and I went fly fishing with guide Mike Batcke, of Baldwin Creek Lodge, on the Pere Marquette River and caught king salmon. Mark caught a female and I caught a male. It was an incredible experience and one we will never forget. This entire area of Michigan is so incredibly beautiful, with the Great Lakes, dunes, rivers, forests and many inland lakes. We traveled up the west coast of Michigan along the lake shore on our way to Baldwin, yes the scenic route. We stopped at three Michigan State Parks and three breweries as we drove along the shoreline. It was a great day. At Ludington State Park folks were wading out into Lake Michigan and fishing for salmon as they entered the river. I don’t think the fish had any idea what was in store for them the next day as they made their way up river home, our fishing poles. But alas, they did not die by our poles that day. We fished on a section of the Pere Marquette that is strictly catch and release. I love being surrounded by Michigan’s natural beauty and floating down the river, following it’s meandering path through forests abundant with wildlife and birds. I don’t know if this happens to you, but I find my creativity is fueled by Mother Nature’s amazing showcase. Having a sketch pad in hand to jot down ideas and beginning rough drafts of future art pieces, is a must for me on trips like this.

Now returning to Ludington and artistic endeavors. Nautical Yarn, right downtown Ludington, is a wonderful fiber and knitting store and owner Carole has all the answers and expertise to get you going on your newest inspired project. Her shop is full of the most amazing yarns, books and notions, perfect selections for the avid fiber enthusiast. She is stocking the store with many new yarns this fall and some old favorites in new colors. Carole’s store has 14 different class offerings from beginning knitting to Latvian mittens. One of the classes is a stash stocking, a great colorful Christmas stocking, and an imaginative method to use up odds and ends of stash and leftover yarn. If you’ve had an idea for a sweater and have had no clue on how to execute your dream without a pattern, one of Carole’s classes might just fill the bill. The Unpattern class. Learn to create your dream sweater, in any size and with any yarn. Ahhh, the keys to creative success. So if knitting and fishing, or fishing and knitting, or just knitting are on your fall to do list and you are any where near Ludington, a must stop is Nautical Yarn.

If you saw my Facebook post last week about cutting a Size 8 knitting needle, which is great news by the way, you know how excited we are about the smaller size. This week we have even better news. We got our new cutting heads and cut a SIZE 6! Yes, for all of you out there requesting smaller size needles, we will be able to accommodate your wishes. The double points will be available right away in the smaller sizes and we already have the decorative copper tops in production for the straight needles.

I can’t believe we’re entering the last official weekend of the summer, but here we are. As I have said before I am way behind on my travel reporting so I am backing up time a month or two and I want to tell you about a great shop along the Lake Huron shoreline, Tawas Bay Yarn Co. Peg has a wonderful shop stocked full of every knitter’s dream yarn and accessories. She has a very wide variety of domestically manufactured and imported yarns. Selections include novelty and traditional yarns as well as exotic blends and dish cloth cotton. There are many books and lots of patterns from many notable designers to keep you inspired. Peg also offers classes and private group lessons too. The shop itself is not very large square footage wise but it is filled to the brim which makes for a fun and fulfilling shopping experience. No wonder Peg calls her shop the “best little yarn shop in Michigan”. So if you are heading up north this weekend stop in Tawas and do some shopping. You can also pick up the Indian Lake Artisans’ knitting needles on your way. There is a big craft show in Tawas and in Harrisville this weekend so take a drive up the coast and tell Peg “hello” from me.

Well it was another whirlwind trip around our wonderful peninsulas. Launching from a great beach side bonfire in Mackinaw City Friday night, we arrived at the Sault Ste. Marie Michigan Welcome Center, on the international border with Canada, Saturday morning. We spent a great day with Kathleen and Marie, demonstrating the wonderful attributes of the knitting needles. My husband Mark is a professional photographer and he is selling some great landscape images on the website, notice the new photographic category, and they are also on display in the Welcome Center along with the knitting needles. Kathleen and Marie assist the multitudes of travelers and send them on their way with new knowledge on attractions and events around the state, the roads to travel, lodging and dining. The staff at these centers answer to a wide range of requests and needs, and they are all friendly, approachable and have a wealth of information at their fingertips. The Michigan Welcome Centers are like a visual library of everything Michigan, including the businesses and products produced here. After our day in the Soo we traveled west to Grand Marais, MI. You will not arrive in Grand Marais by accident, but a trip planned is a good idea. There is a waterfall, some huge dunes along Lake Superior, and even a brewery! Mark and I had the best whitefish (fish n chips) at the Lake Superior Brewery at the Dunes Saloon. After a delicious homemade breakfast at Mel’s Diner Sunday morning, we stopped to check in and drop off some more information to the director at the St. Ignace Michigan Welcome Center. This center gets 250,000 visitors a year. That’s a lot of travelers and a lot of questions. A trip to the other side of the Mackinac Bridge found us at yet another Welcome Center and my second demonstration in two days. Jan was more than helpful in getting us all set up in our display case. We sat outside in the shade in the traveling chairs knitting. Yes “we”. I’m teaching Mark how to knit. The hexagonal shape makes for quick and easy learning. We finished up our trip in Cross Village at the Three Pines Studio. A wonderful art gallery filled with light and a wide variety of unique and quality artwork from local Michigan artisans. The studio also conducts classes and workshops and is going to carry the knitting needles – a great pairing with their hand painted local wools. More on the Three Pines Studio collaborative venture to follow soon. In the meantime, ask for the Indian Lake Artisans’ knitting needles at Tawas Bay Yarn Co. in Tawas, Gloria’s Happy Hooker in Sault Ste. Marie, ImagiKnit in Gaylord, Dutch Oven Yarn Shop in Alanson and Nautical Yarn in Ludington. I’ll fill in the details in the next few days about all the wonderful offerings at these great shops.
